What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a safe, quick and effective procedure for examining your bowel. During the procedure, a flexible telescope is inserted into your back passage, and air is blown into the large bowel. This allows the endoscopist to take detailed photos and perform biopsies to help make accurate diagnoses.
Private colonoscopy with Vista Health begins with an outpatient consultation, lasting around 15 to 30 minutes. We’ll discuss your symptoms and create a management plan, with a referral included in the price if it’s required.
What symptoms would prompt a colonoscopy?
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, a colonoscopy can be used to investigate and help make an accurate diagnosis:
-
Rectal bleeding
-
Unidentified abdominal pain
-
Chronic constipation
-
Diarrhoea
-
Inability to control bowel movements (bowel incontinence)
-
Unexplained weight loss
-
Feeling exhausted for no obvious reason
-
Itchy anus
-
Anal discharge
What conditions can a colonoscopy detect?
A colonoscopy can be used to detect bowel cancer, and to evaluate conditions like Crohn's disease, colon polyps, tumours, diverticular disease and diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, and areas of inflammation.
If colon polyps are discovered during the procedure, they can be removed and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
What happens during my colonoscopy, and how long does it take?
A colonoscopy usually takes between 30-45 minutes, depending on the patient. You may be offered gas and air or a sedative to help you relax, if you feel you need it.
An endoscope - a flexible tube with a camera on one end - will be inserted through your anus to the bowel. The endoscopist will look at pictures on a video screen, while a small amount of air will be pumped into your bowel to allow a clearer view. You may be asked to change positions, for example to lie on your back or side.
During your examination, your doctor may take biopsies (samples of the colon lining) to be analysed later in a laboratory. If polyps (small lumps of tissue) are detected, they can be removed at the same time.
How do I prepare for a Colonoscopy?
Our Patient Care Team will make sure you know how to prepare for your colonoscopy, and you’ll be given advice during your initial consultation. We’ll tell you what you can and can’t eat and drink in the days before your test, and on the day itself.
You’ll also need to take laxatives - again, we’ll make sure you know what to take and when. It’s important that you take the laxatives as instructed, or we might not be able to do your colonoscopy.
If you’re pregnant or think you might be, or if you’re taking any medicines, you should tell us before preparing for your appointment.
