Gastroscopy Patient

What is a gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is a technique that uses an endoscope - a small, flexible camera - that’s passed through your nose or mouth and into your esophagus. From there, it continues to the small intestine or duodenum to examine and gather images.

During gastroscopy, the endoscope can also be used to take small samples, called biopsies, from the esophagus, stomach or small intestine. These can then be sent for analysis under a microscope to help diagnose and determine your condition.

What happens during a gastroscopy?

Your consultant will insert a flexible telescope (endoscope) into the back of your throat and down into your stomach until you're comfortable. The endoscope then travels down into your small intestine (duodenum). Your doctor will examine the images captured by the endoscope and shown on the screen for signs of inflammation or ulcers. If a biopsy is needed, they can perform this at the same time. They'll also use the endoscope to take photos that will aid their diagnosis

How do I prepare for gastroscopy?

Our Patient Care Team will make sure you know how to prepare for your individual appointment. In general, though, gastroscopy requires an empty stomach to give your endoscopist a clear view, and to ensure we can take the images we need. Youll be asked not to eat or drink anything for six hours before your test - although you may usually take small sips of water up to two hours before, if you need to.
