What is a gastroscopy?
A gastroscopy is a procedure where a flexible telescope is passed through your nose or mouth. It allows the endoscopist to look at your oesophagus (Gullet), stomach and duodenum, which is the first part of your small intestine.
During a gastroscopy, the endoscope can also be used to take small samples, called biopsies, from the oesophagus, stomach or small intestine. These can then be sent for analysis under a microscope to aid diagnosis.
What symptoms would prompt a gastroscopy?
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, a gastroscopy could be appropriate for you:
-
Indigestion/Heartburn
-
Acid reflux
-
Long-term abdominal pain
-
Persistent nausea and vomiting of blood
-
Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)
-
A decreased amount of red blood cells in the body (anaemia)
- Any blood in your vomit
What conditions can a gastroscopy detect or treat?
- Infection
-
Ulcers
-
Gullet (oesophagus) inflammation
-
Acidity
-
Peptic ulcers
-
Coeliac disease
-
Hiatus hernia
-
Oesophageal cancer
-
Barrett’s oesophagus
-
Gastro-oesophageal-reflux-disease (GORD)
-
Cancer of the stomach
What happens during a gastroscopy?
Your endoscopist will insert a long flexible telescope (endoscope) into your nose or mouth. The endoscope then travels down into your small intestine (duodenum). Your endoscopist will examine the images captured by the endoscope and shown on the screen for signs of inflammation or ulcers. If a biopsy is needed, they can perform this at the same time. They'll also use the endoscope to take photos that will aid their diagnosis.
How do I prepare for gastroscopy?
Our Patient Care Team will make sure you know how to prepare for your individual appointment. A gastroscopy requires an empty stomach to give your endoscopist a clear view, and to ensure we can take the images we need. You’ll be asked not to eat or drink anything for six hours before your test - although you can usually take small sips of water up to two hours before, if you need to.
